Our clients had lived at this address for 20 years. They had no wish to move. They did however want to take full advantage of their site on the slopes of Balmoral. As the landform allowed only one entry point to the site, the solution was severely restricted. We were unable to exploit the sloping land at the back of this small site.

We had to build on the existing limited platform. Our clients requested that the house “breathe” and perform environmentally in all seasons:

• The house has a northerly aspect.

• There is cross ventilation through the hole of the house assisted by two
ventilating roofs.

• There is never a reason to cool the house and rarely any reason to heat it.

While our clients needed a lap pool, it was to function as a lap pool rather than a “display” pool. We located it on the eastern side of the house and below the rear terrace. It is out of view when on the terrace and from all other parts of the house. The pool is surrounded by vegetation
